EL PASO-Carlos Borruel, the PAN candidate for governor of the Mexican State of Chihuahua, stood before 80 businessmen and professionals Thursday and explained why they should vote for him.
It was a friendly crowd, full of likely supporters. All in all, a routine morning for a man running for governor of Chihuahua — except for one thing:
He was speaking at Paco Wong’s restaurant in West El Paso.
It was the first time in memory that a candidate for office in México had campaigned personally in El Paso.
Borruel was speaking to a group called La Red, or the Network, formed in January by nine Mexican businessmen and professionals who had moved to El Paso because of the violence in Juárez.
Less than four months later, the group has grown to 90 members, most of whom were on hand Thursday to hear Borruel speak. The network’s purpose is to assist members in their new lives on the U.S. side of the border.
